The town wharf was initially owned by Abraham Osborn Sr. and sold to Samuel Osborn Jr. in 1871. This was where whaleships offloaded hundreds of barrels of oil. The wharf was sold to Walter Osborn in 1879, though reduced in size. Today, the wharf is the town parking lot and the Edgartown Yacht Club.

Descendants of Samuel Osborn Jr. are alive and well on Martha’s Vineyard. Osborn’s son Walter had eleven children, and several cousins live in Edgartown; a few heirs share ownership of a sliver of the pier adjacent to the yacht club. Peter Osborn Bettencourt, a great-grandson of Samuel Jr., appreciates “still owning a part of family history.” He recalled peeling potatoes as a child at the Clipper Diner, located where the town parking lot now sits on what was once Osborn’s Wharf.
